NCVT – India’s Hope For Bridging Skill Gap

Never before in India a demographic dividend was this strong. India has more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 and more than 65% below the age of 35. It is expected that, in 2020, the average age of an Indian will be 29 years, compared to 37 for China and 48 for Japan; and, by 2030, India’s dependency ratio should be just over 0.4. Considering the already developed world is ageing – the engines of further growth will have to be handed over to young guns.

However there are not enough schools which can hone the skills of this massive pool of human capital which can be absorbed to boost industrial productivity. The indian government is trying to help the matters with initiatives like Skill India which is aimed at providing vocational training to the students to learn skills which can make them usable to the world. However an already running and old initiatives like NCVT can produce the real skill which can boost overall industrial productivity of the nation. National Council of vocational training which comes under Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship can produce technicians which are skilled in mechanical, electrical, civil and other engineering disciplines. They are easily employable and can boost the underperforming industrial sector to a great extent. The hope of landing a government job or Sarkari Naukri as it is locally called can become reality though this route easily.

NCVT doesn’t require any high educational qualification for enrolment and high school or middle school education is considered sufficient here. The selection process is transparent and jobs are almost guaranteed. The indian economy gets benefitted by the cheap technical labor at its disposal. The examination for admission to this program is conducted twice in a year (February and July) and NCVT MIS Result is declared in first week of April and first week of November every year.

This vocational training program has the potential to create a very large pool of reservoir which can become engine of growth for the industrial economy which India is lacking currently. This would not only provide working skill hands to the industry but will also solve a big problem of employment as well, absence of which can deviate the young minds into routes that no one wants to go.
