What comes to your mind when you think of South Padre Island? My bet is spring break. Well, there is more to South Padre Island than just the spring break. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that so much goes on that tiny island. Let us run through all the events happening there.
Spring (March through May):
This is probably the peak of the tourist season. I’ll not go deep into all the activities as that will be a book in itself. I’ll probably highlight a few in each season to give you a flavor and list the remaining ones.
<em>Javier Marin Tres Cabezas Colosales</em>: Javier Marín has developed a solid career as a visual artist for the last 30 years, holding over 90 solo exhibitions and more than 200 collective shows in Mexico, the USA, Canada, and several countries in South America, Asia and Europe. His exhibition lasts until May 2015.
Sebastian Zodiac Sculpture Exhibit: Free Outdoor Exhibit Fall 2014 – Summer 2015. Exhibits are located at the Convention Centre and Birding and Nature Center
Spring Break Texas Week, 2015 Spring Break Jam, Holy Week / Semana Santa, Ultimate Music Experience,; What else can I say. It is ‘The Week’ with lot of activities.
Other notable events: Farmers Market, Comedy Theater “Boeing Boeing”, South Padre Island Car Show, Splash South Padre Island, Fireworks on the Bay & Gulf Every Friday & Saturday Night Respectively Starting Memorial Day Weekend, Jailbreak, Sand Crab 5K & 10K, Beach N Biker Fest, Pedal To Padre, Zumbathon Beach Party.
Summer (May – August):
<em>Ladies Kingfish Tournament</em>; The 34th annual Ladies Kingfish tournament is held on August 7 through 9, 2015 and is a huge draw not only for lady anglers but also for many visitors. More than 200 lady anglers and 100 or so boats set out to get that big one for the prestigious award.
Fishing For Hope Tournament; The 10th annual Fishing for Hope tournament organized by Doctor’s hospital at Renaissance on August 22, 2015 at Louie’s backyard.
Beer Fest; South Padre without a beer festival? you must be kidding. This is held in late August and obviously a huge draw.
Other notable summer events are: Texas International Fishing Tournament, Isla Del Sol Music Festival, TNOA 5K Fun Run, Beachcombers Art Show.
Fall (September – November):
Sandcastle Days; Held in October, this is one of South Padre Island’s unique events. With lessons on building sand castles and many showcase events, this is huge.
Fall Concert Series on the Bay: There are concerts on South Padre Island throughout the year but the Fall series is special. Last year South Austin moonlighters, Lucas Cook, Bongo Dogs performed.
Other fall events are: Bands On The Beach at Clayton’s, Island Folk Festival, Team Tiger Tournament, Splash South Padre Island, Walk For Women, Walk For Women Fishing Tournament, Zombiewalk, Fireworks on the Gulf Every Weekend Until October, 21st Annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, Glowdash 5K, Port Isabel Shrimp Cook Off.
Winter (Dec – Feb):
Christmas Lighted Boat Parade, South Padre Island Christmas Parade: Christmas is special on the island and these parades make it even more special.
Fun Fly Kite Fest: Another one of special SPI events.
Other events are: Laguna Madre Arts and Crafts Fair, Breakfast with Santa, New Year’s Eve Fireworks at Clayton’s, New Year’s Eve Fireworks at Louie’s Backyard, Penguin Plunge.
